Nicklas Backstrom met with kids today at a youth hockey camp in Gavle, Sweden, his first official public appearance of the summer.
True to typical form, the Capitals star center has maintained a low-profile this off-season. Earlier in the month Backstrom vacationed at a lake in Höglunda, just north of his hometown of Gavle, Sweden.
On Friday, the silky smooth Swede made his first public appearance of the summer to meet and greet kids at the local Gavlerinken Area, the home ice of Brynäs IF of the Swedish Hockey League (Backstrom played for Brynas from 2004-2007). Backstrom has made this a regular event over the past few off-seasons.

Besides a few begrudgingly released photos by his trainer, Andreas Ohgren, Nicky has been out off the public eye this summer, something of a tradition for the Swede. At the beginning of the summer Nicky and the Anaheim Ducks’ Jakob Silverburg spent some time working with kids at a youth school, east of Gavle in Lillhagsskolan, Sweden.
Backstrom will be returning to Virginia a little earlier than usual, in order to begin preparations for this years World Cup of Hockey.
