Each week over the course of 10 weeks, NoVa Caps’ contributor Michael Marzzacco will take a look back at what he believes were the Top 10 Moments of the 2015-2016 Washington Capitals’ season.

#6: The Washington Capitals 2015-2016 Home Opener – October 10, 2015

Home openers are always an exciting time of the year. You don your hat and jersey that had been sitting in the closet all summer, you go to the arena and see your old friends, and you’re back to rocking the red.

Last season’s home opener in particular was an exciting one. Fans got their first look at summer acquisitions Justin Williams and T.J. Oshie and the rest of the Capitals team that entered the season with high expectations and the hopes of making a deep run toward the cup.

The Capitals hosted the New Jersey Devils on Saturday October 10 and Alex Ovechkin got another highlight-reel goal to add to his resume in a 5-3 win. You can read the full game re-cap by clicking here.

The Caps jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Jason Chimera and Brooks Orpik. Chimera’s goal came short-handed. The Devils tied it at 2 with goals by Adam Henrique and Eric Gelinas on the power play.

Nobody was able to score in the second so the third period began with a 2-2 tie until Washington put New Jersey away. At 6:33 of the third, Ovechkin did what he does best.

Joe B says: “…Alex Ovechkin on the toe drag right to the cooker….He S-C-O-R-E-S!” And Locker says: “…he’s a highlight reel waiting to happen!”

Ovechkin went down the ice, did a curl-and-drag move to fake out a defender and fired the puck into the top shelf past Devils goalkeeper Keith Kinkaid.

Marcus Johansson and Matt Niskanen each added a goal on the power play and the Caps opened the season with a 5-3 win. It was the first of 56 wins that season en route to the Presidents Trophy for the NHL’s best record in the regular season.
