The NHL Players Association has announced arbitration dates for all players who have filed for Arbitration.
Marcus Johansson’s arbitration hearing has been slotted for July 20th, at NHL headquarters in Toronto.
So, Caps have nine days to reach a deal with Johansson before the hearing. Some agreements have come after hearing, but before verdict, too.

A list of all of the arbitration hearing dates can be found here. Johansson filed for arbitration on July 5th, just prior to the 5:00 p.m. deadline. Johansson’s filing does not mean a contract could not be reached prior to the arbitration hearing date. There were 25 filings for arbitration last summer, with only eight cases actually making it to a hearing, and only three of those cases requiring a ruling. (Some cases actually reach an agreement during the arbitration hearing process).
The Capitals went to arbitration with Johansson last summer, with Johansson ultimately receiving a one-year deal worth $3.75 million. If Johansson and the Capitals need an arbitration ruling again, then it would be for a one-year deal and Johansson would be an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion the contract.
The Washington Post has reported that “General Manager Brian MacLellan has indicated an uneasiness about what a one-year arbitration ruling for Johansson would look like this time around, as he has some favorable comparables. An arbitrator awarded Johansson $3.75 million after a breakout season, when he finished with 20 goals and 27 assists and played in every game. He maintained that production last season with 17 goals and 29 assists in 74 games.”
