The Washington Capitals, in conjunction with the National Hockey League, today announced the club’s home opener for the 2016-17 season.
From the Capitals Press Release:
The Capitals home opener for the 2016-17 season will be on Saturday, Oct. 15, vs. the New York Islanders at Verizon Center. The complete 2016-17 NHL schedule will be released tomorrow.
The Capitals will open the season in Pittsburgh:
The Capitals will visit the Penguins on Oct. 13, when Pittsburgh will raise the Stanley Cup banner.

Washington last faced a team raising the Stanley Cup banner in 2013 when they visited Chicago to open the season.

The Capitals are 13-2-1-1 all-time in home openers at Verizon Center and 2-0-1 in home openers against the Islanders. Washington posted a 3-0-1 record against New York last season and outscored the Islanders 13-9. Alex Ovechkin (6g) and T.J. Oshie (2g, 4a) led Washington with six points each in four games against New York in 2015-16 and Braden Holtby posted a 3-0-1 record with a 2.19 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage. The Capitals are 102-84-13-6 all-time against New York and 53-36-11-3 against the Islanders at home.

No better way to start the season with a win in Pittsburgh, on banner-raising night. Pittsburgh will probably be out of shape as well.
