We’ve reached the point in the season where players and teams can shed a little more light on the injuries that have plagued them throughout the season.
Karl Alzner confirmed Tuesday night, following the Caps season-ending loss to the Penguins, that he had been dealing with a groin injury of late. Alzner, who has come to garner the nickname as the “Iron Man”, had been dealing with the injury for some time.
Karl Alzner just told me he’d been fighting a groin injury. Tried to go tonight and just couldn’t. Nothing to do with Crosby slash. #Caps

Alzner, who has rarely missed a practice in his career, began taking “maintenance days” in between games prior to the start of the Penguins series.
Trotz didn’t specify Alzner’s injury. Just said he’s been hurt for a while.

I am all for Alzner trying to play, but when you have a groin imjury, that is nothing to mess around with. After Mike Green injured his groin, he was never the same dynamic player he once was. While Alzner is not an offensive weapon, he is a very valuable member of the team and I wouldn’t want to risk damaging it even further. Hopefully he recuperates fully this offseason.
