He Scores!: Alex Ovechkin Scores Goal No. 500

After setting the stage Saturday afternoon with a two-goal showing, Alex Ovechkin scored his 500th career goal tonight. The Great Eight reached the historic milestone in his 801st NHL game.

The countdown began from the first puck drop of the season and Ovechkin has not disappointed. Coming into tonight’s game, Ovechkin was on pace for 49 goals, 26 assists, and 75 points. ┬áThe goal came at 16:19 of the second period.

Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin became the fifth-fastest player in NHL history to score 500 goals on Sunday, scoring his 500th NHL/Capitals goal in the second period against the Ottawa Senators at Verizon Center. Ovechkin scored his 500th career goal in his 801st NHL game, trailing Wayne Gretzky (575 games), Mario Lemieux (605), Mike Bossy (647) and Brett Hull (693) as the fastest to reach the 500-goal plateau.

He also had a total of 932 points in 800 games. In his historic ten-year career, Ovechkin has brought fans out of their seats with his electrifying dekes and spectacular goals. From his four-goal game against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2013-14 season, his first NHL game, to his famous one-handed behind the back goal against the Wayne Gretzky-coached Phoenix Coyotes (now the Arizona Coyotes), the Capitals captain has had one heck of a career. And the scary part? He’s only 30-years old. NoVa Caps congratulates Alex Ovechkin on his 500th NHL goal!
