Monumental Sports is holding two focus group sessions next week to solicit comments and suggestions regarding “in-game” entertainment. (It should be noted upfront that attendance is through invite only). For me personally, I’m glad to hear that Monumental Sports is doing this, and hopefully some great ideas and positive change will come from these focus group meetings. Although I was not fortunate enough to get an invite, I thought I would create my own grocery list. Today’s entry will focus’ on HD video projection systems.
The Verizon Center has fallen behind a bit with regards to technology. A prime example is the absence of an HD video projection system, which has been installed in quite a few of the NHL arenas already. I’m sure you’ve seen these, they project movie quality imagery on the ice, primarily before games. It’s not that this is a critical need, however because many other arenas have already implemented these systems, it leaves one thinking Verizon Center is falling behind the times. Examples of the new technology already implemented at more than 10 areas are provided in the following videos.
Toronto
Chicago
Calgary
New Jersey
I think you get the point. Yes these systems are expensive, yet lesser markets have already implemented. A/V magicians pulling the strings are for several of the systems noted above are from Quince Imaging, a video-production team based in Washington, D.C. Quince has designed and installed on-ice and on-court projection systems for the New Jersey Devils, Cleveland Cavaliers, Calgary Flames, Philadelphia 76ers, and Atlanta Hawks. An article from Wired Magazine sheds additional light on these systems.
Other topics for the focus groups will include in-game music, sound system and sound levels and other “in-game” features. Stay tuned.
What are your thoughts on the In-Game Experience at Verizon Center?
The capitals definitely need this, especially since Quince Imaging’s headquarters is in DC!!!
The capitals intros in the past have been great. I’m just getting a little tired of seeing the same old spotlights fluttering around the arena.
An on ice HD video projection system is a definite must for the Verizon Center.
