As Capitals’ GM Brian MacLellan promised, July 1 was a relatively quiet day (so far) on the Free Agency front. The Caps did sign Forward Stanislav Galiev to a two-year deal, at $575,000 per year and signed Pittsburgh Defenseman Taylor Chorney to a one year contract at $700,000. It is assumed Chorney will be penciled in for the 7th Defenseman. position. The two year deal for Galiev presumably sets a final time limit for Galiev to prove his wares. At 10:30 pm, news broke that the Caps have signed L.A. Kings Forward Justin Williams for 2 years, at $3,250,000 per year. On Thursday, the Capitals traded Troy Brouwer, Phonix Copley and a 3rd round pick in 2016 for T.J. Oshie of the St. Louis Blues. The contract differential will cost the Capitals $508,000 additional against the salary cap. (T.J. Oshie makes $4,175,000 and Brouwer makes $3,666,666)
As a result of the signings the Capitals are now $13,900,000 under the salary cap, with Holtby, Kuznetsov and Johannson still to sign. The good news, assuming Holtby gets around $5.5 million, Kuznetsov around $3.5 million and Johansson around $3 million, the team will still have some money to play with, around $3 million for a big signing. The following is an updated list of the status of all of the Capitals 2015 free agcnts.
