Next Tuesday (July 7th) marks the start of the Washington Capitals annual “Development Camp”. The event, open to the public, brings in Capitals’ prospects from all over the world (including draft picks from this past weekend’s draft), for an annual “checkup” with instructional drills . The prospects work on improving their game through drills and scrimmages, with the week culminating in the annual development camp scrimmage to be held on Saturday, July 11th, at 10:30 a.m.. The full Development Camp Schedule and Guide can be found here.
Following the scrimmage, the Capitals will hold their annual Fan Fest, which will feature the team’s annual equipment sale and autograph sessions with members of the Capitals coaching staff and Capitals prospects as well as a special free open skate.
The early July event provides a good fix for those hockey nuts, including yours truly, who may be experiencing withdrawals since the caps closed up shop for the season. The camp provides a great opportunity to get a feel for the Capitals facilities at Kettler, in addition to checking out the team’s future super stars.
Last year’ camp saw relative unknowns Andre Burakovsky and Liam O’Brien open the eyes of Caps coaching staff, which subsequently garnered the duo an invite to the Capitals pre-season camp, and ultimately saw the two make the Capitals opening day roster.
